The Engineering and Public Works Department is responsible for: 
 
HARD SURFACES - design and supervise the construction of all hard services: roads, sidewalks, storm sewers, sanitary sewers and water-mains within the Public road allowances and Public walkways. Provide routine maintenance and inspection for all of these hard services including winter maintenance on roads and sidewalks 
 
PUBLIC WATER - production, treatment, and distribution of potable water for the City of Stratford, including resource management.  Well and treatment system design and maintenance, reservoir and tower maintenance, water quality testing.  Manage the contract with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) to operate the Water Pollution Control Plant for the sanitary sewer system  
 
WASTE MANAGEMENT - operate the Stratford Landfill Site on Romeo Street.  Supervise the contractors for Refuse, Recycling and Yard Waste Collection * Household Hazardous Waste Collection 
 
PLANNING - review, approve, and supervise the construction of roads and services in new subdivisions.  Review engineering aspects of Amendments to: Zoning, Official Plan , Committee of Adjustment, Site Plan Agreements, Plans of Subdivision.  Approve the location of and supervise all Utility construction on road allowances.  Manufacture and replace traffic signs and posts, paint lane lines, crosswalks, stop bars and parking stalls and maintain traffic signals 
 
MAINTENANCE - provide maintenance and repair services for Public Works, Parks, Recreation, Cemetery and Building vehicles/heavy equipment 
 
ANIMAL CONTROL - supervise the contract with the Stratford Branch of the OSPCA for Animal Control in the City
