Description

Description (Service) Group is looking at improving the experience of accessing support and services for women and children experiencing domestic violence in North Perth. The large issue is rural violence against women. To address this layered challenge, the committee will be looking at the experience of women in North Perth confiding in unconventional service providers and trusted members of the community, rather than formal domestic violence services. As such, the committee will be looking at the rural understanding, and subsequent stigma, of abuse and how they can respond from a community perspective. This would ideally increase the community's capacity to respond safely to women experiencing domestic violence in North Perth and ensure that they are referred to the needed supports. The purpose of the North Perth Violence Against Women Working Group is to foster inter-sector networking and collaboration to address domestic violence in North Perth. The working group will exist as a forum for communication between service providers of various sectors to encourage collaboration and identify further supports, protocols, and partnerships to improve service coordination for rural survivors of domestic violence. Community education and awareness events will attempt to reduce the stigma of domestic violence by increasing awareness of abuse, how to respond to a survivor, and the services available in North Perth; ultimately increasing community capacity.
