Description (Service)

Program helps families taking care of a child with a developmental and/or physical disability, by providing funding to buy services and supports that help parents with caring for their child, or that support the child to join activities at home and in the community

Families can apply to the Special Services at Home (SSAH) program to get funding for:

  • temporary relief for main caregivers (for example, parents) or assists with the extra needs of their child (such as care at home or outside by a respite worker, friend, or non-main caregiver family member, training to learn new skills for supporting their child, help with house chores while they care for their child, like snow removal)
  • activities of personal growth or development for the child, including camps and recreational activities, like swimming and music classes

Eligibility To apply for the Special Services at Home (SSAH) program, you must be the child's parent or legal guardian with decision-making responsibility (the applicant) and the child must:
  • be under 18 years of age
  • have a written diagnosis of a developmental and/or physical disability from a physician, psychologist or psychological associate, nurse practitioner or RN or RPN, ophthalmologist and/or audiologist, optometrist, physiotherapist, psychotherapist, occupational therapist, social worker, speech language pathologist, behaviour analyst
  • be a resident of Ontario and legally entitled to live in Canada (for example, be a citizen, permanent resident, holder of a Canadian Temporary Resident Permit or a refugee entitled to live in Canada)
  • live at home and not receive support from other government-funded out-of-home (residential) services
  • Only one individual with decision-making responsibility for the child can apply for funding
